SEEDING
Seeding in the fall
or early spring is often the most successful
method of improving existing turf areas. Use
of a motorized
thatching or renovating
machine in the early fall or spring
can be helpful in establishing a seed bed,
but a simple metal
rake will suffice. Loosen up
the soil to a depth of 1/4 to 1/2
inch, then apply the seed at recommended
rates.
New
lawns are best planted in the early fall when there is less
competition from weeds. The soil should be
loosened up at
least 1-2 inches deep, using
a motorized tiller, thatcher, aerating
machine, or hoe and steel rake. Then smooth
out surface with a
rake. Soil particles should
be pea to golf ball size. Apply the seed
at the recommended rates to the prepared
area. It is advisable to
use a seed spreader for
larger lawn areas to achieve uniform
distribution. Then work the seed into the
first 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil
with a rake. Larger lawn
areas may then be rolled and smaller areas
may be simply stepped on by foot to insure
good seed to soil
contact.
